Best wrestling gimmick matches... and the worst.

Wrestlemania 1

March 31, 1985

Hulk Hogan and Mr. T (with Jimmy Snuka) defeated Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff (with Bob Orton)

So the gimmick here is that Mr. T, a huge celeb at the time because of The A-Team, as making his wrestling debut. This match was full of useless celebrity cameos, Muhammad Ali was the special guest referee on the outside of ring, which made no sense, New York Yankees manager Billy Martin was the guest ring announcer and Liberace was the time keeper.

VERDICT: Mr. T didn't accidentally kill anyone, so that's cool. Otherwise it was ehhhh. Definitely a show and not an actual match.

April 7, 1986

Mr. T (with Joe Frazier and Haiti Kid) defeated Roddy Piper (with Bob Orton and Lou Duva) in a boxing match

So Mr. T again who a former toughman competitor, vs Roddy Piper, who was a boxer before becoming a wrestler. But he started wrestling at 15, so...

Well, in real life Piper and T hated each other by this point, and if WWF wanted T, he got to call the shots. He was worried Piper would attack him for real without the gloves, so Piper had to wrap his fists into balls, which is why Piper is wearing thumbless gloves.

VERDICT: This was the first time I've seen this, and it's the first phony boxing match I've seen. I can see that T is going easier on Piper than vice versa, with Piper noticeably popping T harder than T is hitting Piper. Definitely too much Rocky drama boxing bits, but hey, it's wrestling. Pretty ridiculous ending.
